EV Charger Installation at Home: What Las Vegas Homeowners Should Know
More Las Vegas drivers are making the switch to electric vehicles, and the most convenient way to charge is at home. A Level 2 charger can fully charge most EVs overnight — but it's not a plug-and-play appliance. Here's what to know before you install one.
Why a Level 2 charger is worth it
The standard outlet trickle charger that comes with most EVs adds only a few miles of range per hour. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit — the same kind your dryer uses — and can add 25 to 40 miles of range per hour. For most drivers, that means a full charge overnight, every night.
Your panel comes first
A Level 2 charger typically needs a dedicated 40- to 60-amp circuit. Many older Las Vegas homes have panels that are already near capacity, especially with heavy summer air-conditioning loads. Before installation, we check whether your panel has room — and if it doesn't, a panel upgrade may be part of the project.
Permits and code matter
EV charger installations require permits and must meet current electrical code. A permitted, inspected installation protects your home, your vehicle's warranty, and your insurance coverage. Be cautious of any installer who suggests skipping this step.
Placement is worth a thought
Where the charger goes affects both cost and convenience. Mounting it close to the panel keeps wiring runs short. Think about where you park, which side your charge port is on, and whether you might add a second EV down the road — planning for it now is far cheaper than retrofitting later.
