Exit Signs and Emergency Lighting: A Business Owner's Maintenance Guide

    October 28, 20263 min read

Ordinary lighting helps a business run. Emergency lighting helps people find their way when normal power fails. For Las Vegas property managers and business owners, these fixtures should be part of an ongoing life-safety maintenance plan.

Normal illumination does not prove backup operation

An illuminated sign or fixture can look fine while its backup battery is weak or its charging system has failed. Proper testing checks the emergency function, not only whether the light is on during business hours.

Keep a clear view of the exit route

Look for damaged fixtures, missing covers, dim signs, and displays or storage that obscure visibility. Keep exit routes clear. A change in tenant layout or use may require review of the lighting plan, even if existing equipment still operates.

    Arrange testing and keep records

Have the responsible professional establish the testing schedule required by the applicable code, local authority, and manufacturer. Record test dates, failures, repairs, and replacements. A brief visual check is not a substitute for required functional or duration testing.

    Plan repairs around occupied hours

Identify the affected fixtures and share maintenance records when requesting service. Coordinate safe work access and any temporary measures with the appropriate professionals. Treat emergency lighting as life-safety equipment rather than postponing failures until the next remodel.
