Backup Power in Las Vegas: What to Consider Before Buying a Generator
An outage can interrupt more than the lights. Refrigeration, communications, and essential equipment all depend on reliable power. Before buying a generator for your Las Vegas home or small business, decide what you actually need to power and how you will use it safely.
Start with essential loads, not the biggest generator
Make a list of priorities: a refrigerator, a few lights, phone charging, or equipment that keeps your business operating. Air conditioning, pumps, and other motor-driven equipment can need much more power to start than to run. A professional assessment accounts for both demands rather than simply counting outlets.
If someone depends on powered medical equipment, discuss an outage plan with their healthcare provider and equipment supplier. A generator alone is not a complete emergency plan.
Portable and standby generators serve different needs
Portable generators usually require manual setup, fuel management, and a safe outdoor operating location. A permanently installed standby generator can start automatically during an outage when paired with the appropriate transfer equipment. Neither option should be chosen on wattage alone: fuel availability, space, noise, maintenance, and local requirements matter too.
Safe connections and placement are non-negotiable
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet to power a building. This can backfeed electricity into utility lines and endanger workers and neighbors. Connecting backup power to building wiring requires suitable transfer equipment and professional installation.
Portable generators must run outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, with exhaust directed away from buildings. Never operate one in a garage, even with the door open. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, keep working carbon monoxide alarms indoors, and have permanent equipment placed according to applicable requirements.
Ask these questions before committing
Which circuits will be supplied? Is automatic operation necessary? What permits or inspections apply? Who will handle fuel connections and ongoing servicing? Review the electrical side with a licensed electrician before purchasing equipment so your backup-power plan fits the property rather than creating another project to solve later.
